The Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) says it will rehabilitate and expand the New Bussa Water Works with N900 million towards ease access to potable water in the area.
The Managing Director, Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa disclosed this in a statement by the Public Affairs Officer of the Commission, Nura Tanko Wakil on Thursday.
Yelwa, who led a team of professionals from the commission along with the Ministry of Water Resources officials to the New Bussa waterworks site for inspection, explained that the project would address the growing challenge of acute water shortage in New Bussa and it’s environs.
“We are partnering with Niger state government to rehabilitate and expand New Bussa waterworks to ease access to potable water in the area,” the statement reads, adding that New Bussa is one of the largest communities resettled for the construction of Kainji Dam and HYPPADEC is now coming in, to fulfill one of the promises made by Kainji Dam Authority to the affected communities.
Yalwa commended Niger state government for queuing in with every sense of commitment and assured that the project is expected to commence soon will be commissioned in december this year.
“The project covers rehabilitation of intake, treatment plant, distribution pipelines, reservoir, office and duty staff quarters.
“It also include expansion of reticulation and provision of more booster stations among others.”
Speaking earlier, Commissioner for Water Resources, Yusuf Suleiman expressed appreciation to HYPPADEC for what he described as a major intervention aimed at improving access to clean water in the state.
He said that the state government will make available all the necessary human and material resources needed for the project to succeed.
The Commissioner assured of a robust framework that will ensure sustainability of the intervention.
The General Manager, Niger State Water and Sewage Corporation, Engineer Hassan Chado expressed happiness as the project is coming when the state water board is undergoing transformation.
Chado said the corporation will ensure effective utilisation of the water scheme to sustain itself in future.
The Emir of Borgu, Muhammad Haliru Dantoro who received the team in his palace, lauded HYPPADEC for its well intended intervention in the affected communities.
According to him, water shortage has been a serious source of concern in the community due to the inefficiency of New Bussa water scheme.
The Emir commended HYPPADEC for responding to the plights of the community and assured of all necessary support for the project to succeed.
