June 12 holds a profound significance in Nigeria’s socio-political development as it symbolises the struggle for democracy and the need for citizen participation. On June 12, 1993, Nigerians across ethnoreligious and sociocultural divides trooped out to exercise their civic duty of electing the president of their country. Although the election was later annulled in the most controversial of circumstances, it goes down in the annals of Nigerian history as the freest and fairest conducted in the nation’s quest for stable democracy. The election has also continued to serve as a reference point in organising credible elections under challenging circumstances. In a symbolic gesture, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration on June 6, 2018, declared June 12 as the new Democracy Day, replacing May 29.
This year’s Democracy Day celebration is particularly momentous as it coincides with the advent of a new democratic dispensation. On February 25, the Nigerian electorate voted overwhelmingly for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a clear indication of their belief in the APC’s Renewed Hope agenda. Since his inauguration on May 29, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hit the ground running, defusing ethnic tension and promoting national unity, fostering harmony and inter-agency collaboration among the nation’s security agencies, and taking difficult yet necessary decisions that will set the nation on the path of economic recovery and prosperity.
As we commemorate Democracy Day, it is crucial to reflect upon the role of citizens in enriching the democratic experience, the importance of patriotism among stakeholders, and the responsibility of key institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in conducting free and fair elections. Additionally, we must condemn military rule and emphasise the perils it poses to our nation’s progress.
Citizen Participation: The Bedrock of Democracy
At the heart of any democratic system lies the active participation of citizens. Ensuring that government actually works for the public good requires informed, organised, active and peaceful citizen participation. The progress of our nation’s socio-political development rests on the shoulders of the people. Democracy thrives when citizens exercise their rights to vote, engage in peaceful protests, hold elected officials accountable, and contribute to the decision-making processes that shape our society. By embracing their civic duties and responsibilities, citizens become catalysts for positive change and ensure that the voice of the people resonates throughout the corridors of power.
Patriotism: A Pillar of Democratic Stability
Patriotism is an essential virtue that must be upheld by all players in the democratic space. As we celebrate Democracy Day, it is crucial to remind ourselves of the importance of prioritising the collective interests of the nation above personal or party affiliations. The love for Nigeria should trounce every other consideration. Political leaders, civil society organizations, and citizens alike should demonstrate unwavering commitment to the well-being of our country. By fostering a sense of unity, shared responsibility, and dedication to national progress, we can create a thriving democracy that works for the benefit of all Nigerians.
INEC: Safeguarding Electoral Integrity
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) plays a pivotal role in our democratic system. As we look towards the future, it is imperative for INEC to uphold its responsibility of conducting free and fair elections. Transparent electoral processes, credible voter registration, and efficient management of election logistics are crucial to inspire confidence among citizens. By ensuring that electoral malpractices are eradicated, INEC will encourage greater citizen participation and strengthen the democratic fabric of our nation.
Internal Democracy: Fostering Political Inclusivity
Political parties are the platforms through which citizens exercise their right to choose leaders. It is vital for political parties to prioritise internal democracy by promoting fair and transparent party primaries. By discouraging the foisting of candidates, parties can foster an environment where merit, competence, and the will of the people guide the selection process. Intra-party democracy ensures that citizens have a genuine choice and are empowered to elect leaders who genuinely represent their aspirations.
Condemning Military Rule: The Path to Democratic Stability
The dark era of military rule in Nigeria stands as a stark reminder of the perils it poses to our nation’s progress. We must unequivocally condemn any attempt to subvert the democratic process through military intervention. As imperfect as it is, democracy is not just a system of governance but a fundamental human right that empowers citizens to shape their own destiny. By embracing democracy, we embrace the principles of liberty, justice, and the rule of law, which are vital for sustainable development and the protection of individual rights.
Finally, as we celebrate Democracy Day today, let us reflect on the significance of this day in our nation’s socio-political development. Citizens are the lifeblood of democracy, and their active participation is crucial for its enrichment. Patriotism among stakeholders, particularly political leaders, reinforces democratic stability and progress. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must uphold its responsibility of conducting free and fair elections to encourage citizen participation. It is worthy of note that security is a significant part of electoral administration. Our security agencies must recognise that electoral integrity requires an atmosphere free of fear, intimidation or manipulation before, during and just after election day. Citizen participation in the democratic process is tied very strongly to the performance of the security agencies. Political parties must prioritise internal democracy to ensure inclusivity and discourage the imposition of candidates. We must vehemently reject military rule as an affliction that is not allowed to rise again.
