The Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) has extended the deadline for submissions to its prestigious annual media awards. Journalists across Africa now have until 12th October, 2025 to submit entries for the 2025 AMDF Journalist of the Year Award.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Sekyen Dadik, the Foundation said the extension would give more journalists the opportunity to participate in the competition, which seeks to honor compelling, development-focused storytelling across the continent.
The award, which is open to both professional and freelance journalists, recognizes works that highlight critical issues affecting Africans while demonstrating quality reporting, strong writing skills, and logical presentation. Eligible works must have been first published or broadcast between 1st September 2024 and 31st August 2025 in an African or Africa-focused medium.
Award Categories
Entries will be received in five categories:
Television
Radio
Photography
Online
Submissions must be made online, with entrants providing links or scanned copies of their published works. Each application must also include a current CV, a high-resolution passport photograph, and a cover statement of not more than 400 words explaining the background of the story, challenges faced, and unusual experiences encountered while reporting.
According to AMDF, only one entry is permitted per journalist, and past winners of the ‘Journalist of the Year Award,’ employees of the foundation, and their immediate family members are not eligible.
Judging and Award Ceremony
Entries will be reviewed by a panel of respected judges with expertise in journalism, who reserve the right to disqualify any work where questions of authenticity or professional ethics arise.
The winner of the 2025 AMDF Journalist of the Year Award, along with the runner-up, will be announced at the Africa Conference on Development Journalism (ACDJ 2025) scheduled for 3rd – 4th December, 2025 in Kaduna, Nigeria.
AMDF emphasized that the competition is part of its broader commitment to strengthening the media’s role in sustainable development across Africa.
