The Oyo State Government has started distributing over five million insecticide-treated mosquito nets across all 33 local government areas in the state.
The official launch of the distribution took place at Idi-Ogungun Primary Health Care Centre, Agodi Gate, in Ibadan North Local Government Area, according to a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, on Sunday.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said the project shows the government’s dedication to protecting vulnerable groups, especially pregnant women and children under five years old.
She warned residents not to misuse the mosquito nets for activities like fishing, gardening, covering windows, or using them for commercial displays.
Dr Ajetunmobi advised people to use the nets correctly, explaining that they are made from light materials that allow air to pass through and do not cause heat if used in well-ventilated rooms.
She also warned that anyone caught hoarding or diverting the nets for other purposes would face legal punishment.
Ajetunmobi urged mothers and pregnant women to make it a habit to tuck their children under the nets every night to protect them from mosquito bites, avoid illnesses, reduce hospital visits, and save lives.
She assured the public that after the main distribution, there would be mop-up activities to ensure no household is left without a net.
“These nets are not ordinary items; they are life-saving tools. When used properly, they create a strong barrier against malaria, which is one of the most deadly diseases affecting our people,” she said.
“Let me be clear: anyone found hoarding, selling, or misusing these nets will face legal action. These nets are given free by the government and donor partners to protect people’s health, not for personal gain,” she added.
The distribution, which will run from August 1 to 7, 2025, is being carried out through designated collection points. Electronic tracking systems are being used to ensure the process is transparent, fair, and reaches every household.
