The Benue State Government has announced plans to relocate people living in houses within a 100-metre radius of the River Benue to prevent flooding and protect lives and property.
Dr. Frederick Ikyaan, Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Solid Minerals, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by his media aide, Mr. Akaha Sule, in Makurdi.
Ikyaan said his office had begun engaging with stakeholders in Wurukum community as part of preparations for the exercise. The government plans to create a new layout and relocate residents living along the riverbank.
“The relocation is aimed at mitigating flooding, which often results in the loss of lives and destruction of property,” Ikyaan said. He also urged stakeholders to sensitise residents and cooperate with the government during the process.
The Kindred Head of Wurukum, Simon Tov, welcomed the initiative, saying the community appreciated the government’s proactive approach and would support the move.
Residents including Mr. Nuhu Apake, Mr. Abdulsalam Amanke, and Mr. Dennis Adanji commended the government for the timely information and appealed for employment opportunities as part of the resettlement plan.
Others, including Mr. Peter Atuba and Mr. Amos Yange, expressed support for the initiative, describing it as a measure that would alleviate their hardships and improve safety in the community.
