Dr Lekan Ogunlowo, Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Care Hospital, Ibadan, has attributed the rising number of young Nigerians diagnosed with diabetes to unhealthy lifestyle habits, including the use of harmful substances.
He stated this in an interview with reporters on Wednesday in Ibadan.
According to him, worsening social habits among young people remain a major concern in the growing prevalence of the disease.
He noted, however, that improved medical knowledge and advanced technology have contributed to an increased detection rate of diabetes cases that previously remained undiagnosed.
He explained that diabetes is a chronic disease that develops over time and occurs mainly in two forms: Type 1 and Type 2.
“Type 1 diabetes usually results from damage to insulin-producing cells and is often detected at a young age, while Type 2 occurs when the body does not effectively use insulin and is commonly discovered later in life,” Ogunlowo stated.
“Early detection remains the gold standard in diabetes management, making regular medical check-ups essential for preventing complications.”
The physician identified excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss and persistent fatigue as common symptoms of the disease.
He added that severe cases could result in unconsciousness due to complications arising from dangerously high blood sugar levels.
Ogunlowo clarified that diabetes cannot be attributed solely to the excessive consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods, as other lifestyle factors play significant roles in its development.
“Excessive alcohol intake and the use of unregulated herbal or other toxic substances can damage the pancreas, thereby affecting the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar effectively,” he cautioned.
He advised individuals, particularly those with a family history of diabetes, to monitor their blood sugar levels regularly and adopt healthier lifestyles.
He urged members of the public to seek professional medical advice for proper diagnosis and management, rather than relying on self-medication.
