The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has announced Delta governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate. Atiku made the announcement at the party’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday at a meeting attended by party executives. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Wednesday that he would attend NATO this summer in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He said Russia’s harming world peace “should never be forgiven.” This will be the first time ever in the country’s history in a move prompted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Saudi officials have been seizing rainbow-coloured toys and clothing, including pencil cases, skirts and hats from shops in the capital as part of a crackdown on homosexuality, state media has reported, saying the items are targeted for ‘contradicting Islamic faith and public morals’, The kingdom opened to tourism in 2019 but, like other Gulf countries, it is frequently criticised for its human rights record, including its outlawing of homosexuality, a potential capital offence. Plateau state government says it has recorded two positive cases of monkeypox in Shendam and Bassa local government areas. The commissioner for Health, Dr Nimkong Lar disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Jos on Thursday. According to him, while the patient from Shendam was treated and discharged, the other from Bassa was responding to treatment. The Sokoto State High Court on Wednesday, dismissed a case filed against LEADERSHIP newspaper and its reporter, Sharfaddeen Sidi Umar for allegedly defaming the former Chairman of the Sokoto State Council of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), Labaran Lumo Dundaye. Dundaye, who filed the suit in 2016, sued LEADERSHIP as the first defendant and Sokoto State LEADERSHIP Hausa reporter, Umar as the second defendant seeking N50 million as damages and apology to be published in three national  newspapers. The Police Service Commission (PSC) says it has deployed a team of surveillance personnel to monitor conducts of police officers during the Saturday governorship election in Ekiti. Russia has announced the ban of dozens of British journalists, media representatives and defence figures from entering the country. The country’s ministry of foreign affairs said the move was Moscow’s response to Western sanctions and the “spreading of false information about Russia.” The banned are 29 journalists and members of British media organisations such as BBC, the broadcaster Sky News and the Guardian and Times newspapers. The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Mr Jean-Claude Brou has said that the community has resumed convergence to launch of its single currency “ECO” in 2027.
