ASHENEWS reports that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Kayode Egbetokun has ordered restriction of movements in 26 states, ahead of Saturday’s re-run and by-election.
This is contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
The states include Niger, Zamfara,Ebonyi, Yobe, Kebbi, Lagos, Ondo, Taraba, Benue, Borno, Kaduna, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Jigawa, Katsina, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Nasarawa, Oyo, Sokoto, and Kano.
The statement said that essential services like INEC officials, accredited media, and emergency responders are exempted.
“Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has mandated a restriction of vehicular movement from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day in 26 states holding run-off and bye-elections on Saturday, February 3, 2024.
“The IGP also bans security aides to VIPs from polling booths and state-owned security outfits from election security management, aiming to prevent interference.”
The statement added that the decision was to safeguard the integrity of the election process.
He emphasized the commitment of the NPF to a secured electoral process.
He further urged residents to conduct themselves responsibly, warning that legal consequences would be taken against those who attempt to disrupt the process.
