The Interim Committee of the Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), Northwest University Sokoto (NWUS) branch, has been formally constituted, marking a key step toward the full operational take-off of the association within the institution’s Faculty of Law.
The committee has commended the Founder of NWUS, Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, for what it described as a “transformational act of student welfare support” following his decision to shoulder the transport fare of all law students to and from their hostels.
Officials of the association, who paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Mukhtar Umar Bunza, on Friday, described the intervention as unprecedented, student-centred, and reflective of sustained commitment to educational accessibility and human capital development.

According to the President of the committee, Nura Namakka, the gesture has significantly reduced financial pressure on students, improved punctuality for academic activities, and strengthened student morale within the faculty. He added that such interventions not only provide immediate welfare relief but also enhance long-term academic productivity and institutional stability.
As part of its developmental commitment, the interim committee announced a contribution of N200,000 toward the construction of “The Scale of Justice” monument within the Faculty of Law premises, describing it as a symbolic investment in legal education, professionalism, and institutional identity.
Namakka stated: “We are prepared to officially commence the activities of the association in accordance with the university’s regulations. The association will serve as a platform for academic development, leadership training, and professional growth for law students.”

Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Umar Bunza, commended both the students and the leadership of the interim committee, describing their initiative as a reflection of maturity, discipline, and institutional responsibility. He particularly praised the founder’s continued support, noting that sustained private interventions in education remain critical to strengthening university systems and enhancing student welfare.
Prof. Bunza recalled the founder’s commitment, saying: “One day, I received a call from the Founder, who said, ‘VC, I have waived the transportation fare for my children. Henceforth, I will be paying the transport fare for them from my pocket every month. Just give me the bill.’ That is what happened, and today, he has extended that support to students living in all our hostels.”
The Vice Chancellor further described Sen. Wamakko’s intervention as a model of responsive leadership that bridges governance and academic communities. According to him, such contributions create an enabling environment for learning, reduce dropout risks, and strengthen public confidence in leadership.
Prof. Bunza also commended the students for complementing institutional efforts through self-driven initiatives such as the proposed “Scale of Justice” project. He noted that such gestures reflect emerging leadership qualities among law students and align with the university’s vision of producing graduates who are academically sound, socially responsible, and development-oriented.
