The First Lady, Sen. Remi Tinubu on Wednesday empowered 250 persons living with disabilities (PWDs) in Ondo State with 50 million naira to improve their livelihood.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that each of the PWDs was presented with N200,000 in cash in Akure.
Mrs Tinubu, represented by the wife of the governor, Mrs Seun Aiyedatiwa, said the gesture was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme for PWDs.
She said the event was significant because it coincided with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The First Lady said the empowerment programme was being implemented simultaneously across the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
“Our nation grows stronger when every individual is empowered to contribute meaningfully.
” A truly inclusive society is built when we stand together, creating opportunities that empower everyone to contribute their unique gifts to our collective progress,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu stated that the grant was to support small‑business owners, recapitalise their existing businesses and to strengthen their means of livelihood.
“This programme aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
” It seeks to promote inclusive growth and shared prosperity by ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind, especially those whose needs are often overlooked,” she said.
The First Lady noted that the government’s social‑investment programmes had provided financial and material support to victims of floods, communal clashes, disasters, the elderly, widows and orphans of fallen heroes.
“Through the RHI Monthly Food Outreach Scheme, we have so far delivered food items to 22 states and the FCT.
“We also provide food items to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other vulnerable communities.
“We remain committed to doing even more to uplift lives and bring hope to those in need,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu therefore enjoined beneficiaries to make good use of the grant.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, commended the First Lady for the gesture and assured beneficiaries of more benefits and opportunities from the government.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr Owolabi Olaiya, who spoke on behalf of the others, said the RHI programmes had been very impactful for Nigerians.
Olaiya commended the First Lady for extending the gesture to PWDs in the state.
