The Abia State Government has said that the renovation of the Permanent Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), situated at Umunna, Bende Local Government Area, will soon commence.

Gov. Alex Otti said this at the opening cum swearing-in ceremony of the 2023 Batch ‘C’ Stream 1 corps members posted to the state.

Otti, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Nwobilor Ananaba, expressed his administration’s resolve to upgrade the camp as well as its facilities.

He said that the government was keen on making the camp more conducive for orientation programmes.

He further said that his administration was committed to the welfare and security of corps members posted to the state as well as making the scheme more functional, efficient and effective.

Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Ufuoma Dick-Iruenabere, thanked the governor for sending some experts to assess the deplorable state of the camp.

“We do sincerely hope that work will soon commence for the upgrade of the camp,” Dick-Iruenabere said.

The state coordinator disclosed that 1,273 corps members, comprising 635 males and 638 females, were registered for the service year.

The state Chief Judge, Justice Lilian Abai, represented by Justice Ogbonna Adiele, administered the oath of allegiance on the corps members.
