ADC aspirants demand zoning of Sokoto South reps seat ahead of 2027 polls

A group of aspirants under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State has formally appealed to the party’s screening committee to zone the House of Representatives ticket for Sokoto South/Sokoto North Federal Constituency to Sokoto South Local Government Area ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a letter dated May 10, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman and Members of the ADC Screening Committee in Sokoto State, the aspirants argued that Sokoto South had ceded the position to Sokoto North for over 24 years in the interest of unity, power-sharing, and political stability.

The letter, jointly signed by Sidi Aminu Lamido, Muhammad Bature Musa, Malami Ahmed M. Basakwace, Buhari Bello S., and Fahad Abubakar Longman, stated that while the arrangement had helped strengthen cohesion within the constituency, the principle of zoning was meant to ensure rotation and balance rather than permanent concession.

“For over 24 years, Sokoto South LGA has ceded this position to Sokoto North LGA in the spirit of unity, power-sharing, and political stability within the constituency,” the letter read.

The aspirants maintained that Sokoto North had enjoyed uninterrupted representation in the House of Representatives for more than two decades, while Sokoto South continued to contribute significantly to the party’s growth, voter mobilization, and grassroots support without adequate representation at that level.

The group based its appeal on three key grounds — equity and justice, political viability, and party cohesion.

On equity and justice, the aspirants argued that a 24-year cycle was enough for one zone to hold the position, stressing that continued dominance by one area undermines the essence of zoning.

“A 24-year cycle is sufficient for any zone to have had fair representation. Continuing the status quo undermines the very purpose of zoning, which is to prevent dominance and ensure every part of the constituency feels carried along,” the letter added.

They also stated that Sokoto South has credible and experienced aspirants capable of winning elections and providing effective representation if given the opportunity.

According to them, zoning the seat to Sokoto South would broaden the party’s support base, renew voter confidence, and strengthen the ADC’s electoral chances in the constituency.

The aspirants further warned that failure to rotate the seat could breed resentment and apathy among party members in Sokoto South, while a zoning arrangement would reinforce inclusiveness and reward loyalty within the party.

“We are not asking for a handout. We are asking for the opportunity to compete on a level field as equal stakeholders in this political family,” the letter stated.

They urged the ADC leadership to consider their request in the interest of justice, pragmatism, party unity, and long-term political stability in the constituency.
