The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Borno Chapter, has established an anti-quackery committee to identify and tackle unqualified medical practitioners operating in the state.
Dr Kaka Ghazali, the Borno NMA chairman, said this in an interview with reporters on Monday in Maiduguri.
Ghazali said the committee was established to strengthen professional standards, protect patients and ensure that medical services were provided by qualified, licensed practitioners.
He said the committee was working with relevant stakeholders, including the Directorate of Medical Services (DMS), to identify and address cases of medical quackery and other professional irregularities.
According to him, the DMS maintains professional communication with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), which regulates the training and practice of medical and dental professionals in the country.
Ghazali said suspected cases of quackery would be reported to the appropriate authorities for investigation and necessary action in line with existing laws and professional regulations.
He said the association was committed to ensuring that individuals engaged in unlawful medical practice were held accountable through established legal procedures.
The chairman also emphasised the importance of synergy among professional bodies, regulatory agencies and government institutions in addressing the problem.
He noted that unqualified medical practice could expose patients to avoidable health risks and undermine public confidence in healthcare delivery.
Ghazali urged stakeholders to support efforts to uphold professional standards and promote safe medical practice in the state.
He reiterated the association’s commitment to working with relevant authorities to safeguard public health and improve the quality of healthcare services in the state.
