Dr Kaltume Shu’aibu, a paediatrician based in Bauchi, has advised women to take folic acid before conception and during early pregnancy to reduce the risk of certain birth defects.
Shu’aibu, who spoke in Bauchi on Tuesday, expressed concern about some women’s reluctance to take prescribed supplements.
She said many women mistakenly believed folic acid was only for those who were already pregnant, and stressed that taking it before conception and in early pregnancy supports a baby’s healthy development.
“Women planning to conceive should seek medical advice and begin taking folic acid before pregnancy.
“Some congenital abnormalities could be linked to family history and other factors,” she said.
Shu’aibu advised expectant mothers to attend antenatal appointments and follow prescribed treatment to support healthy pregnancies.
She also urged caregivers to ensure children receive all routine immunisations and eat a balanced diet to support healthy growth.
