All passengers who sustained injuries in the June 8 train accident on the Warri-Itakpe route have been treated and discharged.
Additionally, all equipment involved in the accident has been fully recovered.
The Managing Director/CEO of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, announced this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.
“One NRC staff member who sustained serious injuries remains under specialist medical care,” Opeifa added.
It was reported that the accident occurred around 4:17 p.m., near Goodluck Jonathan Railway Station in Agbor, Delta, with four coaches capsizing.
The train departed Itakpe Station at noon on its scheduled service to Ujevwu, Warri, Delta.
It was carrying 442 passengers and 40 operational personnel, including train crew, security, medical staff, cleaners, caterers, and other support staff.
Five people died in the accident. Injured persons were rushed to hospitals in Agbor and surrounding communities.
Opeifa stated that all passengers and personnel on board had been accounted for.
He expressed the corporation’s deep sympathy for the families of the deceased and assured ongoing support during this difficult time.
He also thanked the management and medical teams at General Hospital Owa Oyibu, Owa Alero Hospital, and Central Hospital Agbor for their prompt response, professionalism, dedication, and compassionate care.
“Their invaluable support significantly contributed to the successful management of the emergency and recovery efforts,” he said.
He added that, as part of its post-incident response, the NRC had formed a medical and victim support committee to coordinate engagement with injured passengers, families of the deceased, and other affected persons.
“The committee has visited five injured passengers and the family of one deceased passenger in Agbor, Asaba, and Ugbolu, Delta State, and will proceed to Warri to offer condolences to the families of two other deceased passengers, as well as additional injured passengers,” he stated.
Opeifa urged passengers, relatives, and the public seeking information about onboard passengers, lost-and-found items, medical follow-up, or other inquiries to contact the NRC Incident Desk.
The contact numbers are: 09160008964, 09010000101, 08052217353, 08147012653, and 07033684912.
“Meanwhile, with rescue operations and equipment recovery completed, NRC’s Civil Engineering and New Lines Engineers have started rail track restoration work.
“NRC remains committed to cooperating with relevant authorities, implementing safety recommendations from investigations, and strengthening measures to ensure the safety, reliability, and sustainability of railway operations,” he concluded.
