I write this text with tears in my eyes. I didn’t know a day will come when my beloved country will be a valley of the shadow of death. A country where we now live with perpetual fear of been attacked anytime, any day and anywhere, no place is safe. People are killed on daily basis, carcases littered on the street like that of a chicken. We can no longer travel to any part of this country with the hope of arriving safely. We have been sentenced to death, attack and kidnapping for the offence of being a citizen of…

I wish I was not in a country where it is considered normal that after a huge tragedy involving the lives of tens or even hundreds of citizens, a template of press release is whipped out from the shelves of State House Information Unit announcing the “President’s Condemnation” of the incident and “charging security agencies to go after the perpetrators” —and that’s all—Life returns to normal! The Kaduna train tragedy is another normal day in our today’s Nigeria. The misfortune of a recurring evil without abating. Who will save us from them an unrelenting, emboldened network of killers or a…
When a piece of information is dished out, most times we don’t bother to crosscheck before feasting on it and making it go viral. This is one of the challenges of the social and new media era. My intervention this afternoon is, therefore, to help unsuspecting Nigerians have understanding of the issues at stake on the just-concluded national convention of the ruling party, the APC. And I am making it in good faith to help refresh our memories and put issues in perspective as a former Political Editor. First, it is totally untrue to hold the view that the leadership…
Resourcefulness is the most God-given talent endowed to Nigerians at all times. The talent is majorly untapped and remains potential within the capabilities of individuals until challenged by circumstances to manifest. When such talent manifests, the nation does not recognize and accord support to optimize the talent for national advancement. This lack of recognition and support causes brain-drain of talents to other receptive climes where they excel. For instance, in 2016, Nigerians distinguished themselves during Howard University 2016 graduation ceremony by capturing the majority of the prizes. Out of the 96 graduates with Ph.D. in Pharmacy, 43 of them were…
In Russia’s 1998 St. Petersburg local assembly elections, incumbent Oleg Sergeyev had been a thorn in the flesh of totalitarian governor, Vladimir Yakovlev. Upon Sergeyev’s launch of his bid to replace him, Yakovlev waited till the election date to sting him with his amusingly ingenious strategy. On voting day, voters, the majority of whom were illiterate, were at sea when they found two of their adored candidate’s namesakes on the ballot – Oleg Sergeyev and Oleg Sergeyev. The former was a pensioner and the latter, an unemployed man, both of whom had no qualification for the office they sought but…
It is now the season, power will be changing hands and the players are entering the arena to seek our votes, not for our own good, but to continue to divide and ruin Nigeria. Last week, I took up the question of civics and the very poor quality of our political class. I argued that we do ourselves a great disservice by accepting it as a given that our leaders lack integrity and competence and yet we allow them to govern. By so doing, we are as guilty as the politicians in creating the ideological basis for excusing the political…
The new global trend leadership and management of nations is one that favours the reality that younger leaders have a significant advantage over their older counterparts which is the reason they excell faster The younger leaders all over the world are proved to embrace change and exhibit great skills at marketing their new ideas. They have the courage to make difficult changes, possibly because their youthful dynamism causes them to be more optimistic about their proposals for change. They are more willing than their elders to be the champions of change. Younger leaders also know how to get others energized…
The war started on 24th February 2022 making it to be in the fourth week with carnage multiplying by the day. Although, there was a serious threat to Russian interest and national security but cannot justify the kind of destruction being inflicted on Ukraine. Truly, Ukraine is a mere pawn in the global chessboard of America and Russian supremacy of power tussles. The carnage, human waste, infrastructural collateral damage, and the deadly blow on the world economy are too costly for the human race to bear and ignore. The world may be brought to its knees if something is not…

Gladys Ukeje was the daughter of Lazarus Ogbonnaya Ukeje, who died in Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria, in December 1981. He left behind property but did not make a will. In June 1982, Lagos State granted his wife Lois and son, Enyinnaya, the right to administer and share the estate to the exclusion of Gladys. She sued them on 22 February 1982 before the High Court of Lagos. Nearly nine years later, on 10 January 1992, the High Court of Lagos delivered judgment in favour of Gladys. Lois and Enyinnaya appealed to the Court of Appeal and from there…
