The Acting Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), Prof. Usman Muhammad Sani, has commended the Founder and Chairman of the Governing Council of Northwest University, Sokoto (NWUS), Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, for what he described as his unwavering commitment to building a world-class institution.
Prof. Sani, represented by the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (Clinicals), Dr Ibrahim Abdulqadir, gave the commendation on Friday when he led a delegation of UDUTH officials on an assessment visit to the NWUS College of Health Sciences as part of the existing mentorship and affiliation agreement between the two institutions.
He said the partnership aligns with the shared vision of strengthening healthcare education, producing competent medical professionals and improving healthcare delivery for the benefit of society.
During the visit, the delegation toured the university’s ultra-modern multi-purpose laboratory complex, the College of Health Sciences, the library, e-library and simulation laboratory. The team was conducted around the facilities by Prof. Umar Muhammad, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, and Dr Jamil A. Lukman, the Deputy Provost.
Speaking after the inspection, Dr Abdulqadir expressed satisfaction with the quality of facilities provided by the university.
“The efforts of the founder of this fast-growing institution, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, are not only commendable but also not unexpected. Knowing his passion for education and community development, what we have seen today reflects his vision and commitment,” he said.
He added that the investments made by the founder would have a lasting impact on medical education and healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
“What he is doing for his community, Sokoto State and indeed Nigeria through education cannot be overemphasised. Establishing facilities of this standard within such a short period demonstrates purposeful leadership and a genuine desire to invest in future generations.”
The Acting CMD further assured the university of UDUTH’s commitment to the mentorship arrangement.
“We are impressed with the progress recorded so far. UDUTH will continue to provide the necessary academic and professional support to ensure that the College of Health Sciences develops in line with national and international standards.”
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of NWUS, Prof. Mukhtar Umar Bunza, stated that the university, established in 2022, had witnessed remarkable growth due to the vision, commitment, and sustained support of its founder.
He noted that the 10-year mentorship arrangement with Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) and UDUTH had continued to strengthen the university’s academic programmes and institutional development.
“The mentorship being provided by UDUS and UDUTH across our academic programmes has been highly encouraging. It is laying a solid foundation for the growth of this young university and positioning it to meet global standards.”
Prof. Bunza attributed the institution’s rapid development to what he described as the founder’s unwavering support.
“These achievements have been made possible through the holistic commitment of our founder, who has provided the management with an open grant to facilitate the smooth running of the university. We continue to receive all the support expected from a leader who is genuinely passionate about advancing education and national development.”
He added that the university had already begun attracting strategic collaborations with reputable international higher institutions, a development he said would further enhance teaching, research and innovation.
Among those who received the UDUTH delegation were the Registrar of NWUS, Alhaji Umar Garba Garunbabba; the Bursar, Alhaji Garba Sarkin Baki Shinkafi; the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Umar Muhammad; and the Deputy Provost, Dr Jamil A. Lukman.
On the UDUTH team were the Hospital Secretary, Ibrahim Ladan; Hauwa BaSambo, HOD Nursing; Asma’u Muhammad Jega, Acting Head (Legal) and Aminu Sada, Head of Staff Development Office.
