Police Inspector, Istifanus Kwanchi, who was filmed firing shots from an AK-47 assault rifle to celebrate the reopening of the Ladipo Market in Lagos state, has been taken into custody, the spokesperson of the command, Benjamin Hundeyin has confirmed.
“The police officer in this video, Inspector Istifanus Kwanchi, serving with the Mobile Police (MOPOL), has been brought in for appropriate disciplinary actions.
“@LagosPoliceNG condemns in its entirety all forms of unprofessional and unethical behaviour on the part of its officers and men; and will definitely bring to book anyone found culpable,” he wrote.
In a viral video shared on X on Tuesday, a man was seen firing shots into the air while onlookers cheered him on.
In his initial reaction, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force Olumuyiwa Adejobi said that a probe had been launched and the man would be identified.
He wrote in an update, “The man has been identified. The Lagos state police command will speak on it asap. Let’s wait for their reaction on the matter. I really commend the efforts of the CP on it. Excellent indeed. Thanks.”
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) closed the spare parts market because it was observed that its management had not fully met the stipulated mandatory safety and environmental measures earlier outlined by the Authority.
