The Kwara State Government has integrated eye-care services into its Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) and trained 30 additional health workers to enhance service delivery.

The training, held on Monday in Ilorin, was organised by the Kwara State Primary Healthcare Development Agency in collaboration with VisionSpring, a global social enterprise.

Prof. Nusirat Elelu, Executive Secretary of the agency, said the initiative is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to expand eye-care services across PHCs in Kwara.

She noted that participants came from Ilorin West, Ilorin East, Ilorin South, Edu, Patigi, Kaiama, and Baruten Local Government Areas.

“The training equips participants with practical knowledge and skills in basic eye screening, vision assessment, data collation, and referral protocols,” Elelu said.

She reaffirmed the commitment of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to delivering people-centred healthcare services.

“The government is dedicated to ensuring that every community has access to essential health interventions, including eye care.
“This exercise is a vital component of the Nigeria Jigi-Bola spectacle initiative.
“Over 22,200 free reading glasses have already been distributed across more than 30 PHC centres in the state,” she added.

Elelu commended VisionSpring for its support and collaboration with the state government.

In his remarks, Dr. Sa’ad Koki, Programme Manager of the PHC Power Project at VisionSpring, praised participants for their enthusiasm and urged them to apply the knowledge gained in their respective facilities.

“This will ensure accurate reporting and effective service delivery,” he said, reaffirming VisionSpring’s commitment to strengthening primary eye care and improving vision access for all.

It was reported that the recent training brings the total number of health workers trained to 90 across 45 PHC facilities in Kwara State.
