The Kano State Government has inaugurated the Local Organizing Committee for the UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) Programme 2025 — a landmark initiative aimed at promoting cultural preservation, youth engagement, and sustainable development.
This was contained in a statement issued on Friday in Kano by the Press Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Musa Tanko.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to preserving the state’s cultural heritage.
He commended UNESCO for its collaboration with member states, noting that the programme aligns with the state’s vision to promote culture, heritage, and tourism.
“The Kano State Government remains committed to driving growth, particularly in preserving and promoting cultural heritage,” Yusuf stated.
He added that through the initiative, Kano seeks to position itself as a beacon of history, culture, and creativity in Nigeria and across Africa.
Earlier, the Programme Director of UNESCO WHV Nigeria 2025, Malame Mangzha, commended the Kano State Government for its leading role in safeguarding Africa’s cultural assets.
Mangzha described Kano as a custodian of Africa’s heritage, citing landmarks such as Kurmi Market, Dala Hills, and other archaeological sites as enduring symbols of Hausa civilization.
She said Kano’s vibrant traditions remain testaments to resilience and identity, adding that the project will further strengthen the state’s global cultural standing.
According to her, several national and international organizations are expected to partner in the programme, thereby enhancing Kano’s status as a cultural hub and attracting new investments.
Mangzha said the inauguration marks the beginning of a national campaign to engage communities and stakeholders in heritage protection, in line with UNESCO’s vision for culture, conservation, and youth empowerment.
She also commended the Kano State Government for its warmth, hospitality, and commitment to cultural advancement.
The newly inaugurated committee is chaired by Aisha Lawan-Saji and includes eminent personalities from government, academia, and the cultural sector.
Members include Prof. Tijjani Naniya, Special Adviser on Emirate Councils; Dr. Bashir Muzakkari, Director-General, Kano State Information Technology Development Agency; and Abdul Zakirai, Permanent Secretary, Protocol Directorate, Government House.
Others are Binta Abdullahi, who serves as Secretary, and Jamilu Usman as Assistant Secretary II.
The UNESCO WHV Kano Programme 2025 aims to deepen cultural preservation awareness, promote sustainable tourism, and strengthen community participation in heritage protection — further highlighting Kano’s reputation as a cradle of history and civilization.
