The Federal Government has approved a ₦50,000 examination fee per candidate for the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal, effective from 2027.
The development follows a request by WAEC for an upward review of registration fees for its Senior School Certificate Examination for school candidates, effective from 2027.
The approval was conveyed in a letter dated June 18, 2026, from the Federal Ministry of Education to NECO’s Registrar, following discussions on an upward review of examination fees.
The letter, signed by A. Ibrahim, Director of Senior Secondary Education, on behalf of the Minister of Education, said the decision was intended to establish a uniform examination fee for NECO and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
According to the ministry, the Minister of Education had directed both examination bodies to adopt a uniform fee at a meeting held on March 31, 2026, where the need to review examination charges was discussed.
The letter stated that the ₦50,000 fee would apply to each candidate sitting the NECO SSCE Internal examination from 2027.
It also directed NECO to communicate the decision to all relevant stakeholders.
