The Federal University of Science and Technology (FUST), Kabo, Kano State, has secured accreditation for 20 academic programmes, including medical courses, ahead of the commencement of its maiden academic session.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, who welcomed the development, congratulated the university’s Governing Council, management and staff, urging them to sustain the achievement by maintaining high standards of academic excellence.
Barau spoke on Thursday when the Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Governing Council, Grace Titilayo Laoye-Tomori, led members of the council on a courtesy visit to him at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Laoye-Tomori, a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, described the accreditation as a major milestone that had placed the institution on a solid footing to commence academic activities.
She also acknowledged Barau’s contributions to the establishment and transformation of the institution, tracing the process to 2016 when he sponsored the bill for the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic, Kabo.
According to her, the senator subsequently facilitated the institution’s conversion into a full-fledged university in 2025.
“Today, we have 20 outstanding courses accredited, including medical programmes. On behalf of the Governing Council, management, staff and students, we sincerely appreciate his tremendous contributions to the development of this institution,” she said.
Responding, Barau expressed delight at the progress recorded by the university within a short period and pledged continued support for its development.
He also commended President Bola Tinubu for signing the bill that facilitated the institution’s conversion from a polytechnic to a university.
The Deputy Senate President, who represents Kano North Senatorial District, stressed the importance of quality education and skills development in harnessing Nigeria’s human resources, particularly its youth.
“I remain committed to supporting the institution in every way possible because our greatest asset as a nation is our human resources, particularly the youth. We must ensure they have access to quality education and the necessary skills to drive national development,” he said.
He urged the university’s leadership to sustain the momentum and ensure that its academic programmes meet the highest standards.
