A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), SweetThinkers, has organized the second stage of its 2025 annual quiz competition aimed at promoting academic excellence among pupils in Lagos public primary schools.
The SweetThinkers Top 200 Academic Excellence Competition is part of the NGO’s structured initiative to improve learning outcomes in Lagos public schools, reaching over 2,000 pupils across the 20 local government areas of the state.
Speaking at the Lagos Central Centre of the competition, Oluwatosin Akinola, SweetThinkers Project Manager, said the initiative was designed to inspire young learners and foster a culture of excellence in public schools.
Akinola noted that the competition underscores the NGO’s commitment to making education a shared community responsibility while driving long-term impact through scholarships and infrastructural support for schools.
According to her, the programme aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by spotlighting outstanding pupils in Lagos public schools.
“This stage marks a significant milestone on the journey to the grand finale, where pupils will showcase their knowledge, confidence, and potential,” she said.
She explained that over 2,000 pupils participated in the first stage of the competition across the state, out of which 200 qualified for the second stage held simultaneously in Lagos Island, Oshodi, and Maryland.
“This second stage was keenly contested.
Forty pupils — 10 each from Lagos Central and East districts, and 20 from Lagos West due to its larger pool of participants — have now qualified for the next round.
The successful participants will advance to the 2026 grand finale, where they will be assessed on speed, accuracy, and excellence, and three winners will emerge,” she said.
Akinola added that the grand finale would offer scholarship opportunities and cash prizes to winners, as well as infrastructure support to their schools.
In his remarks, Mr. Bamigbade Olamilekan, a teacher at Federal Housing Estate Nursery and Primary School, Victoria Island, commended SweetThinkers for the initiative, noting that the quiz had motivated pupils to excel academically.
“This is a laudable initiative that adds value to the academic development of our young pupils and strengthens the public education system,” he said.
One of the participants, Esther Iyiola from Kuramo Primary School, Eti-Osa, described the competition as challenging but enriching, saying it had prepared her for future contests.
Similarly, Ileka Abuchi from Animasahun Primary School, Surulere, said she was excited to be part of the quiz and appealed to SweetThinkers to sustain the programme.
