The League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV) has renewed its advocacy for greater political inclusion and representation of women as it marks its 30th anniversary.
Its president, Mrs Irene Awunah-Ikye, made the call in a statement on Monday in Abuja ahead of the anniversary celebration.
The anniversary’s theme is “Thirty Years Strong: Empowering Women’s Voice, Leadership and Democratic Participation, Celebrating the Past, Shaping the Future.”
Awunah-Ikye said the anniversary offered an opportunity to reflect on the organisation’s journey, celebrate its achievements and reaffirm its commitment to expanding opportunities for women in leadership and governance.
“The anniversary offers an opportunity to celebrate how far the organisation has come while acknowledging that much work remains to be done.
“It is also a call to the next generation of women leaders to find their voices, step forward with confidence and play an active role in shaping the country’s future,” she said.
She added that NILOWV had contributed to efforts to build a Nigeria where women’s voices matter, their leadership is valued, and their contributions to democracy and national development are recognised.
According to her, the organisation has consistently encouraged women to participate in elections, take up leadership positions and contribute to governance through voter education, advocacy, grassroots mobilisation and strategic partnerships.
She said a key part of NILOWV’s advocacy was its support for the Special Seats Bill for Women, a proposed constitutional reform aimed at increasing women’s representation in legislative institutions.
“The message is clear: women’s participation is essential to a stronger democracy, and a more inclusive Nigeria requires the voices, ideas and leadership of women at every level,” she said.
Awunah-Ikye reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to building on its achievements and creating more opportunities for women and girls across Nigeria.
The anniversary activities are expected to bring together stakeholders, including women leaders, government officials, policymakers and civil society organisations, to discuss the future of women’s leadership in Nigeria.
Highlights of the anniversary week include special engagements, an All Women’s Conference, an Old School Hangout, a multi-stakeholder summit, a 30 Years Impact Exhibition, and a gala and awards night.
