[VIEWPOINT] Implications of Dasuki’s Emphasis on the Welfare of Security Personnel

The recent emphasis by the House of Representative member, represneting Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State, Abdussamad Dasuki on the welfare of military officers and other security personnel during the House plenary session has highlighted several critical implications and actions for the Nigerian government.

By Abdallah el-Kurebe

Dasuki’s statement brings to light existing gaps and challenges in the welfare and support provided to military and security personnel. This acknowledgement is crucial, as it underscores the need for improvements to ensure that these individuals, who are pivotal in maintaining national security, are adequately supported.

One significant implication of Dasuki’s call is the need for accountability and performance reviews of political appointees responsible for security.

By urging the President to review their performance, Dasuki emphasizes the importance of effective leadership and management within the nation’s security apparatus. This call for accountability is essential to ensure that those in positions of power are effectively addressing security challenges and not compromising the safety and well-being of security personnel.

The well-being of security personnel is intrinsically linked to their effectiveness in combating insecurity. When welfare provisions are inadequate, it can lead to decreased morale, inefficiency, and higher attrition rates among security forces. This, in turn, affects the overall security operations and the ability to maintain peace and order in the country. Thus, improving the welfare of security personnel is not only a matter of ethics but also a strategic necessity.

Discussions in a plenary session, such as Dasuki’s, also place political and public pressure on the government to take concrete actions to address these issues. The visibility of these concerns in a legislative setting forces the government to prioritize the welfare of the personnel and to implement measures that will enhance their performance and morale.

Recommendations for the Nigerian Government:

1. Enhance the welfare and benefits: Salary and Allowances will ensure competitive and timely payment of salaries and allowances to all security personnel.

2. Healthcare: Provide comprehensive healthcare services, including mental health support, for all security personnel and their families.

3. Housing: Improve housing conditions and ensure adequate accommodation is available for security personnel and their families.

4. Implement Performance Reviews: Conduct regular performance reviews of political appointees and senior officials responsible for security to ensure they are meeting their objectives and effectively addressing security challenges.

5. Provide Adequate Training and Resources: Regularly update training programs to include the latest tactics, technologies, and strategies for combating insecurity; and ensure that security personnel are equipped with modern and adequate tools, equipment, and protective gear to perform their duties safely and effectively.

6. Support Systems and Counseling: Establish robust support systems, including counseling services, to help security personnel cope with the stresses and traumas associated with their roles.

7. Strengthen Community Relations: Foster better relationships between security forces and communities through community policing initiatives and regular engagement with local leaders and citizens.

8. Transparent Promotion and Career Development: Ensure a transparent and merit-based promotion system to boost morale and encourage professional growth among security personnel.

9. Review and Reform Security Policies: Regularly review and update security policies to reflect the changing dynamics of threats and ensure a proactive rather than reactive approach to security.

By prioritizing the welfare of military and security personnel and holding political appointees accountable, the Nigerian government can enhance the effectiveness of its security operations, improve morale, and ultimately strengthen the fight against insecurity.

Dasuki’s emphasis on these issues is a crucial step towards ensuring that those who protect the nation are themselves protected and supported.
