The Ondo State Government has warned residents against consuming unapproved substances, herbal drinks, concoctions, and other products not certified safe by relevant regulatory authorities.
Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, issued the warning in a statement in Akure on Thursday.
The warning followed a recent incident in Odigbo, where some individuals reportedly died after consuming unauthorized substances.
Ajanaku urged residents to exercise caution and avoid patronizing or consuming products of doubtful origin. He emphasized that the safety, health, and wellbeing of residents remain top priorities of the current administration.
“The government strongly cautions sellers, producers, and distributors of uncertified substances to immediately cease such practices.
“The production, sale, and distribution of unapproved substances pose serious health risks and may attract legal sanctions,” he stated.
He also warned citizens, especially youths, against drug abuse and the unauthorized use of substances that could cause serious health complications or death.
Residents were advised to obtain medicines and consumables only from authorized and regulated outlets.
Ajanaku further urged the public to seek professional medical advice instead of resorting to unverified remedies.
He commended Odigbo LGA Chairman, Mr. Taiwo Adegboye, for his prompt intervention to protect residents’ lives and wellbeing.
The government is investigating the Odigbo incident to determine the cause of the reported deaths, with relevant agencies working diligently to uncover the facts.
The commissioner called on residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic.
