[BREAKING] LG poll: Kano fixes N10m, N5m for chairmanship, councillorship nomination forms

The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced that candidates aspiring for the positions of Local Government Chairman and Councillor in the upcoming elections will be required to pay a non-refundable nomination fee of N10 million and N5 million, respectively. This was disclosed by the Chairman of KANSIEC, Professor Sani Lawan Malunfashi, during a press briefing held in Kano on Thursday.

Professor Malunfashi unveiled the electoral timetable and guidelines for the local government elections, stating that the fees are mandatory for all candidates seeking to participate in the electoral process. He emphasized that the charges are meant to ensure serious participation and to cover administrative costs associated with the election.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions from political parties, candidates, and civil society organizations in the state. Critics argue that the high cost of nomination forms could disenfranchise many qualified candidates, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds, and limit the democratic process to only those with significant financial resources.

Supporters of the policy, however, believe that the fees will help to filter out unserious candidates and ensure that only those with genuine intentions and the necessary resources to govern effectively will contest the elections.

The electoral timetable released by KANSIEC outlines key dates for the local government elections, including the deadline for the submission of nomination forms, the commencement of campaigns, and the election day itself. The timetable also includes provisions for the resolution of electoral disputes and the announcement of results.

The KANSIEC Chairman assured the public that the commission is committed to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections. He called on all political parties and candidates to adhere strictly to the guidelines and to conduct their campaigns peacefully and responsibly.

As the election day approaches, all eyes will be on Kano State to see how the high nomination fees will impact the electoral landscape and whether it will indeed lead to a more serious and competitive race for local government offices.

Further details and reactions from political stakeholders are expected in the coming days as the electoral process unfolds.
