The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced plans to conduct local government elections on November 30, 2024. This announcement was made by the Chairman of the state electoral body, Professor Sani Malunfashi, during a press briefing in Kano on Wednesday.

Professor Malunfashi emphasized the commission’s commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process. In a significant move to maintain the integrity of the elections, he announced that all candidates would be subjected to drug tests before being cleared to participate in the elections.

“We are dedicated to conducting an election that reflects the will of the people of Kano State,” said Professor Malunfashi. “To ensure that candidates are of sound mind and body, we will require all candidates to undergo drug testing. This measure is part of our broader efforts to uphold the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.”

The announcement of the election date comes as the state prepares for a significant political event that will determine the leadership of its local government councils. The election is expected to be highly competitive, with various political parties vying for control of the local councils, which play a crucial role in grassroots governance and development.

The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission has called on all political parties and stakeholders to cooperate and ensure a peaceful and orderly election process. The commission has also assured the public that adequate arrangements are being made to facilitate a smooth election, including the deployment of security personnel to maintain order.

As the election date approaches, KANSIEC will release further guidelines and schedules for the electoral process, including the timelines for the submission of candidates’ names, campaign activities, and other relevant procedures.

The announcement has generated significant interest and anticipation among the residents of Kano State, who are keen to participate in the democratic process and elect their local government representatives. The focus on drug testing for candidates is seen as a progressive step towards promoting responsible leadership and ensuring that elected officials are fit to serve.

This election is a pivotal moment for Kano State, offering an opportunity for the electorate to voice their preferences and contribute to the development and governance of their local communities.
