The Center for the Advancement and Protection of the Rights of Vulnerable People (CAPRIGHTS-VP) has strengthened partnerships with faith-based organizations to reduce exploitative child domestic work in Lagos State.
In a statement on Thursday, the organization announced that the program ran from May to June 2026.
The initiative is supported by the Freedom Fund, with funding from the United States Department of State, focusing on faith-based organizations in Alimosho Local Government.
The outreach was led by Mrs. Agatha Chinedu, Security and Protection Officer; Mrs. Vivian Emesowum, Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning Officer; Mrs. Mercy Oni, Project Coordinator; and other CAPRIGHTS-VP staff.
Oni, speaking on behalf of CAPRIGHTS-VP, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to protecting children through partnerships with faith-based groups, government agencies, community leaders, and stakeholders.
“Protecting children from exploitation is a shared responsibility that everyone must shoulder,” she said.
“Faith-based organizations are well-positioned to influence families, promote positive values, and encourage communities to act against child abuse. Through these partnerships, we are strengthening local systems that protect children and help end exploitative child domestic work in Lagos,” she added.
Sensitization outreaches were conducted at St. Rita Catholic Church, Akesan; The Redeemed Christian Church of God; and Living Faith Church to promote child protection and community responsibility.
Religious leaders, congregants, children’s ministry coordinators, and members of children’s departments were mobilized to prevent exploitation, encourage early reporting of abuse, and enhance child protection practices within communities.
Participants discussed the realities, warning signs, and harmful effects of exploitative child domestic work, while promoting safe, supportive, and nurturing environments where children are respected and protected.
Interactive presentations, practical examples, and Q&A sessions helped participants gain practical knowledge on identifying, preventing, and responding to cases of child abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
CAPRIGHTS-VP also organized dedicated sessions for children’s ministries, delivering age-appropriate messages to help children recognize unsafe situations, understand their rights, and confidently report abuse or exploitation.
Children’s ministry coordinators received guidance on responding appropriately to protection concerns and supporting affected children, while strengthening safeguarding measures in churches and faith-based organizations across Alimosho.
The organization distributed IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) materials to faith leaders and congregants, and introduced reporting and referral mechanisms, including a toll-free line (0800 800 8001) and the TALKAM App.
CAPRIGHTS-VP is a non-governmental organization committed to protecting and promoting the rights of vulnerable people through advocacy, community engagement, and evidence-based child protection interventions.
