The recurrence rate of vulvo candidiasis is through the roof. Some women experience it every month!

There’re eight possible reasons you keep having this infection.

What is vulvo candidiasis?

Vulvo candidiasis is a fungal infection of the lower female reproductive tract. It is also called ‘thrush’ or ‘yeast’ infection.

This infection is very common, 75% of all women are likely to have at least one episode in their lifetime.

What are its causes?

90% of candidiasis cases are caused by Candida albicans.

Candida albicans are present as part of the vaginal flora, however it causes an infection when there’s an overgrowth.

What are the symptoms of vulvo candidiasis?

  • Intense itching in the vaginal area
  • Burning sensation during urination or intercourse
  • Thick, white and odorless discharge that looks like cheese
  • Redness or swelling of the vulva
  • Soreness or rash in the vaginal area.

How is it diagnosed?

Vaginal candidiasis is usually diagnosed based on symptoms, however;

  • A high vaginal swab is taken to confirm the presence of Candida
  • A pelvic exam can also be used to check for swelling and redness.

How is it treated?

Treatment is done by using;

  • Topical antifungals
  • Anti-fungal tablets
  • Vaginal inserts

Probiotics are also given to re-introduce healthy bacteria to the vagina.

8 reasons you keep having this infection

  • You engage in unprotected sexual intercourse
  • You douche; Wash with scented soap
  • You abuse antibiotics/ Take it when not indicated
  • You take in a lot of sugar/ You have uncontrolled diabetes
  • You stay in wet clothes for sometime after swimming or working out
  • You wear tight, synthetic, damp or dark colored underwear
  • You’re pregnant or use estrogen containing contraceptives
  • You have a weak immune system from disease conditions
  • You’re genetically predisposed

What can you do about it?

  • Maintain proper hygiene; Don’t use harsh soaps, keep the vaginal area clean and dry always.
  • Wear breathable underwear; Choose cotton panties, avoid tight clothes, change out of wet clothes immediately.
  • Control blood sugar, reduce intake of sugar and carbonated drinks, take cranberry juice instead.
  • Don’t take antibiotics if you don’t need it, it kills the beneficial bacteria in the vagina.
  • Avoid unprotected sex with multiple partners, use water based lubricants and always urinate after sex.
  • Boost your immune system; exercise, eat healthy food and manage stress
  • Use probiotics; It reintroduces beneficial bacteria to the vagina.
  • Go for regular checkups, to rule out any underlying condition

Finally, boric acid suppositories are very helpful in cases of recurrence.

NB: They shouldn’t be used as first line treatment.

Vaginal candidiasis is usually due to an imbalance of the vaginal pH.

It is known as an opportunistic infection because it takes advantage of any shift to invade.

Maintaining a good personal hygiene is key.
