The Sokoto State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has so far received no petition, four days to the deadline for filing petitions with the panel.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto as winner of the governorship election on March 20, 2023.

ASHENEWS reports that according to the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended) those not satisfied with the declaration of results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), are supposed to file their petition(s), within 21 days, including the date of the declaration.

The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Bolna’an Dongban-Mensem, constituted petition tribunals across the country on February 20, 2023, and the Sokoto State Chief Judge, Justice Mohammed Saidu Sifawa approved the allocation of two court rooms for hearing of the governorship election petitions, and National Assembly as well as the State House of Assembly elections petitions.

However, when ASHENEWS visited the tribunal at the premises of the State High Court, the Secretary of the Tribunal, Mr. Sunday Martins said no petition had so far been filed.

“As we speak, the election petition tribunal in Sokoto State, has not received a single petition,” he told ASHENEWS.
