The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for Nigerian women and girls to study science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim made this commitment in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.
The statement was signed by her Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Jonathan Eze.
The statement was to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
This year’s ceremony has “Inclusive Green Growth for Gender Equality” as its theme.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim, while reaffirming government commitment to promoting mentorship, education and opportunities for women in science, lauded the resilience and achievements of Nigerian women that were breaking barriers in STEM.
According to her, this year’s theme aligns with the ministry’s commitment to advancing gender equality and ensuring that women and girls in Nigeria have access to the tools and resources needed to thrive in STEM fields.
She stressed that despite facing systemic barriers, Nigerian women and girls were making remarkable strides in STEM.
The minister underscored the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in ensuring sustained progress and inclusivity in science and technology.
“As we commemorate this important day, I join the global community in celebrating the achievements of women and girls in STEM.
“Their contributions are invaluable to national development, and it is imperative that we continue to support, mentor, and create enabling structures that foster their participation,” she said.
The minister called on every stakeholder to collaborate in promoting STEM education and dismantling barriers that hinder the full participation of women and girls in scientific fields.
“Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable society where every woman and girl has the opportunity to innovate, lead, and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of science and technology,” she said.
