An entrepreneur, Dr. Obaje Austin, has called for the adoption of solar technology to drive economic growth, strengthen value chains, and create jobs in Nigeria.
Austin, Managing Director of Powerverse Tech Ltd and Executive Director of Oyoyo Market Square Ltd, made the remarks in an interview with reporters on Sunday in Abuja.
He spoke during the one-year anniversary of Oyoyo Iceblock, a solar-powered business initiative.
Austin said solar energy has the potential to transform Nigeria’s economy and improve livelihoods across sectors.
His solar-powered ice block production business demonstrates how renewable energy can support small-scale industries and stimulate economic activity.
“For example, we developed the Oyoyo Ice Block Industry, powered 100% by solar energy, even though it was not part of our initial business plan,” he said.
Austin also converted his home to a fully off-grid solar-powered system, providing uninterrupted electricity for over two years. The system powers appliances such as freezers, air conditioners, water pumps, and irons without relying on the national grid.
The ice block business began on a small scale, producing about 12 blocks daily, but has since expanded to 48–50 blocks. Increased production capacity has attracted more customers and boosted business performance.
The initiative has created jobs for graduates and prospective National Youth Service Corps members. Customers travel from Mararaba in Nasarawa State and Gwagwalada Area Council to buy the ice blocks.
The business has also developed a value chain involving tricycle operators, traders, and retailers who rely on the product for their livelihoods. “In the mornings, tricycle riders transport the products, while women buy and resell them to others who use them to cool drinks for sale,” he explained.
Austin noted that the ripple effect of the business supports multiple income streams and contributes to local economic development.
He urged stakeholders to invest in solar energy solutions to unlock broader economic benefits nationwide.
His company has also developed machines that can be remotely operated via mobile devices, with plans to upgrade the technology with advanced features during a forthcoming trip to China.
