Sokoto Community Guards Corps – Banditry has been a major security challenge in Nigeria, particularly in the northern part of the country. Sokoto is one of the states that are severely affected by the menace of bandit attacks, which have caused the loss of lives and property. To address this issue, the Northwest Governors of Nigeria came together to find a solution.

By Usman Binji

The creation of the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps (SSCGC) was the outcome of the decision by Northwest Governors to address banditry and kidnappings in the region.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has taken a proactive step towards addressing the security challenges in the state by establishing the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps (SSCGC).

Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s efforts in the establishment of the SSCGC are commendable. The establishment of the outfit is a testament to his unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the people of Sokoto State. The outfit’s creation is a proactive step towards addressing the security challenges in the state, particularly the menace of banditry.

It is important to say that the SSCGC is a community-based security outfit comprising able-bodied men who are trained and equipped to provide security services to their communities.

The SSCGC should operate by gathering intelligence, conducting patrols, and providing security for communities in the state. They should collaborate with the security agencies in the state to provide timely and accurate information that can help in the arrest and prosecution of bandits and other criminals.

The establishment of the SSCGC has received widespread support from the people of Sokoto State, and its creation appears as a positive step towards addressing the security challenges in the state.

One sociological theory that underpins community policing is the social control theory. Social control theory suggests that individuals are naturally inclined to engage in deviant behavior, but are deterred by social controls such as the fear of punishment, the presence of authority figures, and the internalization of social norms and values. Community policing, with its emphasis on collaboration between the police and the community, seeks to strengthen these social controls and thereby deter deviant behavior.

The Sokoto State Community Guards Corps (SSCGC) is an example of community policing in Nigeria.

From a sociological perspective, community policing is based on the principles of social control, which emphasize the importance of informal social control mechanisms in regulating behavior. The police are not the only agents of social control in society; rather, social control is a collective responsibility that involves the police, the community, and other institutions of society.

It is our ardent hope that SSCGC will engage in community sensitization and mobilization of support for it to achieve the desired goals.

In conclusion, the establishment of the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps is a commendable effort in addressing the security challenges in the state. The outfit is an example of community policing in Nigeria, which emphasizes the importance of the cooperation and involvement of the community in the fight against crime. The use of community-based approaches to policing is a sociologically informed strategy that recognizes the importance of informal social control mechanisms in regulating behavior. The SSCGC should work closely with the security agencies in the state to provide a safe and secure environment for the people of Sokoto State and the northern region at large.
