Four residents of Gorau community in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State have been killed, while seven others sustained gunshot injuries after armed bandits attacked the community.
The assailants also abducted four residents during the attack, which occurred on Wednesday, throwing the community into panic and forcing residents to flee for safety.
According to residents, the attackers invaded the community and opened fire, killing four people and leaving seven others wounded. The injured victims were subsequently taken to hospital for medical treatment.
The bandits also took four residents away before fleeing the community with their captives.
The latest attack has further deepened the grief in Gorau, coming only days after a boat accident at the Gorau crossing point reportedly claimed the lives of 65 people, including women and children.
The successive tragedies have heightened concerns over the security and safety of residents in remote communities across Goronyo, where many people depend on farming, fishing and transportation for their livelihoods.
Residents have consequently renewed calls on the government and security agencies to strengthen security operations in the area and prevent further attacks.
The incident also adds to growing concerns over the worsening banditry and kidnapping crisis in parts of north-western Nigeria. A recent SBM Intelligence report cited by Reuters said 7,825 people were kidnapped across Nigeria between July 2025 and June 2026, while at least 1,142 people were killed during the period.
