The management of MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has charged its staff and customers to remain committed to electricity safety, stressing that “electricity does not forgive mistakes.”
The Managing Director of MEDL, Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, gave the charge while declaring open the company’s Safety Week on Wednesday in Enugu.
Mupwaya urged everyone to remain disciplined and build a strong safety culture.
“Let us build a culture where safety is lived every day and every life is protected,” he said.
He called on staff and customers to work safely, look out for one another, and speak up when things go wrong.
“Every task carries a responsibility not just to perform well, but to protect lives — our own, our colleagues, and the communities we serve.
“Safety is not a policy or a checklist. It is a culture. It is in the choices we make every day, especially when no one is watching.
“We have made progress in our operations, but none of it matters if we lose a life. No target or result is worth that cost. This week gives us a chance to reflect. Let us observe a minute of silence for our fallen colleagues, customers and others who lost their lives due to safety lapses,” Mupwaya said.
Corroborating, the Head of Health, Safety and Environment at MEDL, Dr. Francis Iwu, said the company was joining the global community to commemorate the World Day for Safety and Health at Work with the theme: “Ensuring a Healthy Psychosocial Working Environment.”
“In MainPower, we firmly believe that a healthy worker is a productive worker. When our employees are mentally, emotionally, and physically well, they are more focused, engaged, and better equipped to deliver safe and reliable services,” Iwu said.
He called on all staff to renew their commitment to making safety and health a way of life, not just a policy.
Activities lined up for the Safety Week, running from May 4 to May 8, include safety inspections and facility tours, trainings/workshops, radio and television awareness programmes, as well as customer and school engagements.
