The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has disclosed that the country reported 1,786 suspected cases of Cholera between June 20 and 26 this year. The Director-General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu in Abuja on Saturday, listed the states as Bauchi, 1,239 cases; Kano, 362 cases; Niger, 62 cases; Zamfara, 55 cases; Kaduna, 59 cases and Plateau, nine cases. He said that in the preceding week of June 13 to June 19, five states, Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau and Zamfara reported 1,757 suspected cases. The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, HYPPADEC, Mr Joseph Ityav has disclosed that 350 people lost their lives to boat mishaps in Nigeria in 2020. Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has called for protection of Nigeria’s remaining elephants to save them from extinction. Country Director, WCS, Mr Andrew Dunn, made the call in a statement made available in Lagos on Saturday. Dunn noted that Nigeria was home to hundreds of thousands of elephants who used to roam the country. He said that less than 400 of these elephants were currently surviving because of poaching for their ivory and habitat loss. “Elephants are on the verge of extinction in Nigeria,” Dunn said. The Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC) has registered 186 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) infections from three states. The NCDC said this on its official website on Saturday morning. The figure represents an increase from the 146 cases recorded on Thursday and 110 cases posted on Wednesday. It said 186 additional cases were reported from three states as of July 9.
