The Niger Republic military officers who ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, have warned the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) to steer clear of the internal affairs of the country, and against any military intervention.
The ECOWAS at its extraordinary Summit ON Abuja on Sunday, declared that it only recognised Bazoum as the legitimate President of Niger Republic and also reiterated its earlier resolution to restore democratic governance in that country.
“Such measures may include the use of force. To this effect, the Chiefs of Defence Staff of ECOWAS are to meet immediately,” a communique issued at the end of the meeting, stated.
But the spokesperson of the military junta, Col. Amadou Abdramane on the Niger national television stressed their determination to defend their homeland with the last drop of their blood.
“The objective of the ECOWAS meeting is to approve a plan of aggression against Niger through an imminent military intervention in Niamey in collaboration with other African countries that are non-members of ECOWAS, and certain Western countries.”
They rejected the position of the ECOWAS leaders, warned about the likely consequences that will flow from any foreign military intervention, and added that any confrontation proposed by ECOWAS, will end in massacre of the people and create chaos.
