As the world marks Cancer Day 2024, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Remuneration Committee, Afam Osigwe (SAN), has urged lawyers to prioritize their health and wellbeing.

Osigwe made the call in a statement on Sunday, following commemoration of the World Cancer Day.

The World Cancer Day aims to prevent millions of deaths each year by raising awareness about cancer, and pressing governments and individuals to take action against the disease.

Between 2022 and 2024, the focus of World Cancer Day is to help “Close the Cancer Gap” and 2024 marked the third and final year of the campaign.

The theme for 2024 campaign s “Together, we challenge those in power.”

This theme encompassed the global demand for leaders to prioritise and invest in cancer prevention and care and to do more to achieve a just and cancer-free world.

According to Osigwe, the celebration is a reminder to legal practitioners, to always put their health and safety first , in spite of their busy work module.

He stressed the need for routine medical checks by practitioners, which he said,  would help facilitate the detection of early cancer signs and other ailments.

“Cancer is an exhausting journey that drains the life out of individuals, and lawyers, often consumed by the demands of their profession, may inadvertently overlook their health.

“It is a stark reminder that we must prioritise our well-being and be vigilant to improve the chances of early detection.

“Let us foster a culture of health consciousness by organizing more free cancer screenings at events, and making it more accessible for our members.

“Early detection can be a game-changer, providing a better chance at successful treatment,” he said.

Osigwe also called on the leadership of the NBA as well as other forums, sections and branches, to join in raising awareness on the ailment as well as ways out.

“Without doubt, there is need for the NBA, its different sections, forum and local branches, to further take proactive measures to raise awareness about cancer within our immediate legal community.

“Moreover, it is essential to revisit and reassess the existing medical and health initiatives tailored for our members.

“We must ensure that these programmes effectively address the diverse needs of our vast legal community,” he said.

He encouraged lawyers, or their loved ones who are currently battling cancer, to remain hopeful for a cure.

“To our esteemed colleagues and friends who are currently battling cancer or have a loved one engaged in this fight, we share a passionate statement of hope, encouragement, and prayer,” he said.
