Prices of grains have reportedly crashed in Bauchi markets following the harvest of new crops in the state.
A market survey conducted by reporters across markets in Bauchi on Thursday showed a decline in the prices of major grains over the past week.
A measure of rice, previously sold for ₦1,800, now sells for ₦1,400, while a 100kg bag of unpeeled rice sells for ₦40,000.
Maize is sold for ₦450 per measure, down from ₦550, while a 100kg bag now costs ₦35,000, against the previous ₦45,000.
Millet currently sells at ₦1,400 per measure, compared with the former price of ₦1,700, while guinea corn sells for ₦600 per measure, down from ₦700.
The cost of Bambara nuts remains at ₦1,300 per measure, as the new harvest is yet to reach the market.
Groundnut is selling at ₦1,400 per measure, while a 100kg bag now costs ₦130,000, compared with the previous price of ₦160,000.
A measure of beans is sold for ₦1,200, down from ₦1,500, while a 100kg bag, previously sold at ₦110,000, now costs ₦90,000.
Mr Aminu Mohammed, a grains seller at Yelwa Market, attributed the decline in prices to the bountiful harvest recorded during the rainy season.
Mohammed also said a measure of soya beans remained at ₦1,200 because the new harvest was preferred by consumers due to its richness in milk production.
Another seller at Wunti Market, Mr Danbajari Ayuba, said he was enjoying increased patronage due to higher demand for grains following the fall in prices.
Similarly, Mrs Maimuna Salisu, a buyer, said prices of grains were relatively low during the harvest period, adding that she was taking advantage of the situation to buy and store for her family’s consumption.
