The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Jigawa has urged Nigerians to prioritise eye health through regular examinations and early detection of sight-threatening conditions.
NOA State Director Mr Ahmed Ibrahim said this in a statement by the agency’s spokesperson, Sarah Ogodo, on Thursday in Dutse.
The call formed part of activities to mark the 2026 World Sight Day, themed “Love Your Eyes.”
Ibrahim said preventable blindness and visual impairment remain a public health challenge, particularly in rural communities where awareness of regular eye checks is low.
“Many cases of blindness are avoidable if detected early and given proper medical attention,” he said.
Ibrahim urged residents of the state to embrace regular eye examinations at accredited health facilities and to protect their eyes from dust, direct sunlight and harmful chemicals.
He also advised parents to ensure early eye screening for children, particularly those of school age, while discouraging self-medication and the patronage of unqualified practitioners.
The director enjoined residents to maintain good personal hygiene and eat foods rich in Vitamin A to improve eye health.
He further urged community and religious leaders, the media, and youth and women groups to support eye health awareness campaigns.
“Early detection saves sight, and to love your eyes is to love your future.”
