The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Sokoto State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has expressed grief over the death of one of its members, Mr Olugbemi Adeniyi, publisher of The Guild Newspaper.
Adeniyi died in Abeokuta, Ogun State, after a brief illness.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Mr Musa Ubandawaki, the Chapel said his death had cast a pall of mourning over the journalism community in Sokoto State, where he was widely regarded as a dedicated professional.
The statement said his commitment to journalism and active participation in union activities earned him the respect of colleagues.
The Chapel Chairman, Mr Ankeli Emmanuel, described the late publisher as a committed member whose contributions would remain indelible in the memories of his colleagues.
Emmanuel said the death was a devastating blow to the Chapel, noting that Adeniyi was not merely a member of the union but a colleague whose presence and professional dedication strengthened the bonds of fellowship among journalists in the state.
The chairman extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, associates, colleagues and members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Sokoto State Chapter, where Adeniyi was secretary. He urged them to find comfort in the positive memories and professional legacy he left behind.
The statement said the death was particularly painful for colleagues who shared professional responsibilities and union activities with him, adding that the loss of a colleague “goes beyond the newsroom.”
The Chapel prayed for the repose of his soul and for his family, friends and the journalism community to have the fortitude to bear the loss.
It also urged journalists to remain united in grief and continue to uphold the professional values for which Olugbemi stood.
