Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi on Tuesday distributed 225 brand-new Yamaha motorcycles to councillors across the state’s 21 Local Government Areas to strengthen grassroots governance and improve service delivery.
Speaking at the distribution ceremony at Government House, Birnin Kebbi, Idris said the gesture fulfilled a promise made after consultations with the councillors.
He explained that the motorcycles would enhance the mobility of councillors, enabling them to effectively discharge their responsibilities at the ward level.
“After our consultative meeting, we found it necessary to fulfill our pledge to the 225 councillors in the state,” he said.
Idris noted that the motorcycles would improve access to remote communities, strengthening communication between elected representatives and their constituents.
He expressed confidence in the councillors and local government chairmen to support government policies aimed at citizens’ welfare.
According to him, the motorcycles will empower councillors to stay in close contact with the people, identify their needs, and relay concerns to authorities for prompt action.
The governor urged beneficiaries to use the motorcycles responsibly and to increase their visits to wards for effective representation and grassroots development.
He congratulated the councillors on the intervention and encouraged them to remain committed to community progress and the state’s development.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Kebbi Councillors Forum Chairman Abubakar Abdullahi-Chaba described the gesture as unprecedented and a sign of the governor’s dedication to strengthening local governance.
He said the motorcycles would enhance councillors’ ability to carry out legislative, oversight, and community engagement functions.
He also emphasized that the intervention would improve access to communities and facilitate better service delivery at the grassroots level.
The forum chairman thanked the governor for his support and assured of the councillors’ continued loyalty and cooperation.
He pledged to redouble efforts to serve constituents and support the administration’s development agenda to improve living conditions across the state.
