The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has distributed relief materials to residents of Ogu community, Ogu-Bolo Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers, following a recent flooding.
The support was provided to ease the hardship caused by the disaster that destroyed homes and farmlands in the area.
Presenting the items in Ogu community on Thursday, the Managing Director of NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, stated that many families had been struggling to cope with the loss of their livelihoods.
Represented by Mr Jeremiah Onolejoloni, Director II, Education, Health and Social Services at NDDC, Ogbuku said that the gesture reflected the NDDC’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities in the Niger Delta.
“The flooding caused significant hardship for residents of the community,” he said.
He explained that the commission partnered with the Derek and Davia Foundation to deliver the support.
“NDDC provided financial support to the non-governmental organisation to supply food items and household materials to the people of Ogu-Bolo.
He said the initiative was aimed at easing the economic burden of the affected families, adding ‘’it is not merely the distribution of palliatives, but a demonstration of the government’s compassion and presence.”
Ogbuku urged community members to ensure the fair distribution of the items and further called for peace and support for government development programmes in the area.
The Paramount Ruler of Ogu-Bolo, Chief Joachim Amachiri, commended the commission for the intervention.
“The support will go a long way in alleviating the sufferings caused by the flood,” he said.
Amachiri pledged the community’s continued support for NDDC programmes.
Dr George Smile, a consultant for the programme, commended the NDDC for the initiative, stating that efforts were ongoing to extend similar support to other affected communities in the state.
