The Edo Government has inaugurated a statewide sensitisation tour across tertiary institutions to intensify its campaign against substance abuse among youths.
Led by Mr Andrew Efe, Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Monday Okpebholo on Drug and Illicit Control, the initiative, tagged “Shine Above Drug Abuse,” is taking prevention messages to students in the three senatorial districts.
Institutions visited include the University of Benin, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, and Auchi Polytechnic.
Speaking at the University of Benin on Wednesday, Efe said the tour was necessitated by the alarming rise in drug misuse among young people and the need for early intervention, in line with Okpebholo’s vision.
He said government was committed to building a future where Edo youths rose above drugs, crime and the pressures that led to substance experimentation.
Addressing students during a town hall session, Efe urged them to make responsible choices and support one another in creating drug-free campuses.
He highlighted the dangers of drug abuse, the influence of illicit substances and the importance of seeking help early.
“A new Edo begins with a new mindset,” he said, encouraging students to break negative cycles and inspire positive change.
At Ambrose Alli University, Efe noted that schools remained the most strategic spaces for preventive action, urging students across the state to “keep shining, keep striving and keep choosing a brighter future.”
He expressed satisfaction with the turnout across campuses, saying the engagements resonated strongly with participants.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that many students raised concerns about peer pressure and the availability of substances around campuses.
The tour featured interactive town hall sessions, rallies and solidarity marches for drug-free learning environments.
Cash prizes were also awarded to outstanding participants during question-and-answer sessions to encourage active engagement.
