ASHENEWS reports that the Minna Fashion Show dazzled audiences with its 6th edition, drawing a fantastic turnout and positive reception. The event, which showcases local talent and creativity, has grown significantly since its inception, an indication of the dedication and vision of its organizers.

The event held on the 7th of July was all show and pageantry showcasing the different fashion styles of residents of Minna metropolis who took the time to dress up in their best for the show. It was also an avenue for fashion designers across Niger state to dress up their clients in the finest of styles both designed from inception or an inspiration by other fashion designers.

Celebrating local talent

With each edition, the Minna Fashion Show continues to shine a spotlight on local talent, challenging stereotypes and pushing the boundaries of creativity in the fashion industry.. The inspiration behind the Minna Fashion Show is to celebrate and promote local talent in the fashion and entertainment industry.

“The support from the people of Minna and my fellow fashion designers is truly overwhelming,” says the Chief Organizer, Ezekiel Elizabeth Ebele. “Each year’s motivation comes from the designers’ passion, the attendees’ enthusiasm, and the opportunity to showcase Minna’s vibrant fashion scene to a global audience”, she said.

The show had over 10 fashion designers from across Niger state showcasing their styles in native, corporate, bridal, dinner and sporty wear. The show was also graced by musicians from Minna, Abuja, Kaduna and Jos.

To appreciate the attendees, the best-dressed male and female alongside the person who designed their outfits were awarded cash prizes and other gifts.

Evolving design philosophy

Over the years, the design philosophy of the Minna Fashion Show has evolved significantly. Initially focusing on simple styles suitable for daily wear, church, or wedding attire, the show has now embraced more contemporary and experimental designs.

These designs, according to Ezekiel who is also the CEO of Mega House of Fashion, can compete on any global runway, including prestigious events like the Paris Fashion Show.

Challenges and triumphs

Organizing a fashion show in Minna comes with its own set of challenges. “Acceptability was one of our biggest hurdles,” explains the Organizer.

“In the conservative northern region, fashion shows are often misunderstood as promoting indecent dressing. Additionally, securing funding and sponsorships, coordinating with designers and models, and managing logistics are ongoing challenges. However, the biggest success has been creating a platform that brings together talented designers, models, artists, and fashion enthusiasts across the state”, she stated.

Models for the Minna Fashion Show are selected through auditions, focusing on individuals who possess not only physical attributes but also confidence, poise, and the ability to bring the designer’s vision to life. Diversity is valued, with models representing a range of styles and looks.

Embracing sustainability

Sustainability is becoming a key focus for the Minna Fashion Show. The organizer mentions plans to incorporate sustainable practices, such as using more locally sourced materials and seeking collaborations and sponsorships to support these initiatives.

The role of technology and social media

Technology and social media have been instrumental in the success and promotion of the Minna Fashion Show. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, along with live streaming, help reach a wider audience and engage with fashion enthusiasts in real time. “Most of our tickets are sold through our social media presence,” notes the organizer.

To keep designs fresh and innovative, the Minna Fashion Show team disclosed that they closely monitor global fashion trends and listen to feedback from their audience. This feedback, according to the team, helps them improve their designs and ensures they remain cutting-edge and relevant.

Advice for aspiring designers

To aspiring fashion designers, Ezekiel urges them to stay true to their unique vision and creativity. “Focus on improving your craft, building a strong portfolio, and cultivating relationships within the fashion community.

“Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, stay abreast of industry trends, and always prioritize quality and innovation in your designs. Never underestimate the power of perseverance and determination—it takes time and effort to succeed, but passion and dedication will ultimately set you apart”, she said.

The fashion scene in Minna

Reflecting on the fashion style of Minna and Niger State, the Organizer acknowledges the conservative nature of the region due to its predominantly Muslim population. However, this has not been a stumbling block but rather an inspiration.

“Fashion is art, and art has different modes of expression. It doesn’t have to be revealed to be fashionable,” she explains.

The future of the Minna Fashion Show looks bright as the Organizers said that the show is not stopping anytime soon. “It will go on as long as I have the strength to keep pushing it,” says the Chief Organizer.

“The vision is to attract sponsorship and promotion from both the government and the private sector. For now, the team continues to do their best to keep the fire burning and put Minna on the map for the world to see.”
