Nigeria Association of Women Entrepreneurs (NAWE) says Nigerian women are independent minded, in terms of business and career.
Its Lagos Director, Mrs Abimbola Oyetunde, said this in Lagos during a walk to commemorate the International Women’s Day.
According to Oyetunde the month of March is women’s month and the association decided to also commemorate the day with a walk, to create awareness about women.
She said that most women, nowadays, are self-reliant, while they also contribute their quota in sustaining their families.
“They are out there, working and they do not expect the men to do everything needed in their houses,” she said.
She also said that women had realised that they needed to be self- dependent, saying that “they do something for themselves, no matter how small”.
“The women are coming up. They are there, not high high up there, but majority of Nigerian women have this entrepreneurial spirit; the I can do spirit.
“You see the ordinary woman in the market struggling from 5:00 a.m, some are even out there as early as 4:00 a.m at times, at least to put food on the table, to pay children’s school fees and to send them to school.
“Some are not educated, but they want their children to be educated. Where they did not get to in life, they want their children to get there, so they always struggle,” she said.
Oyetunde said that these women also put saving measures in place, to be financially independent, which make the Nigerian women stand out.
She, therefore, reiterated that Nigerian women are growing but they are coming up.
Speaking, Mr Adeleye Ajayi, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Lagos Chapter, urged the Nigerian women to imbibe the catalyst of entrepreneurship and its characteristics.
Ajayi said that the women should be self-motivated and be able to take risks, as well as embrace some entrepreneurial skills, acquire networking, amongst others.
He also admonished women to brainstorm on researches, writing, human management, service, orientation, negotiation and raising capital if need be.
