The Federal High Court in Kaduna has adjourned the hearing of the case brought by the former governor Nasir El-Rufai…
In the suit, El-Rufai asked the court to declare the report of the Assembly probe as null and void having not been given the opportunity of fair hearing over the allegations levelled against him and his administration by the committee.
“The privilege of being a Governor has an expiry date. In your case, if you are lucky, another seven years. But from the way things are unfolding, I believe the default expiry date for your tenure is another three years. Both you and President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu have sent out the worrisome signals of being anything but democrats.
“We are in receipt of a petition from an NGO. So, we have started investigation in the matters raised in the petition.
Malam Nasir El-Rufai is immensely proud of his record of governance and the legacy he left in Kaduna State. Among those invited so far include the former Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce, Manzo Maigari; former Commissioner of Budget and Planning, Thomas Gyang; Commissioner and Administrator of Zaria Metropolitan Authority, Balaraba Aliyu; present Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mukhtar Ahmed, amongst others.
The committee, therefore, recommended the investigation and prosecution of El-Rufai, and some other indicted members of his cabinet by security and anti-corruption agencies for abuse of office through the award of contracts without due process, diversion of public funds and money laundering as well as plaguing Kaduna State into heavy debt.
Propelled by ideology or driven by pragmatic desire for a working and dynamic country, many Nigerians see the merit in devolving powers and responsibility to the subnational level. It is seen as key to further unleashing the productive impulse, spurring creativity, rewarding the competitive instinct, and promoting better governance across the states.
