Spying the spymaster: Political phone bugging, by Zubair Abdurra’uf Idris

In the shadowy world of Nigerian politics, a high-stakes game of cat and mouse is unfolding between two former allies, Malam Nasir El-Rufa’i and Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser. The air is thick with tension as the battle for supremacy reaches a fever pitch.

The war of words has been brewing for some time, with El-Rufa’i unleashing a barrage of criticisms against Ribadu, labeling him a tyrant. However, Ribadu, the epitome of a spy master, has chosen to remain silent, refusing to be drawn into the fray.

The latest salvo in this war is El-Rufa’i’s claim that Ribadu’s phone conversation with Governor Uba Sani, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Chairman was bugged. As the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) releases the timetable for congresses, the stakes have been raised. El-Rufa’i’s desperation to undermine Ribadu is palpable, with some speculating that he’s on a mission to “pull him down”. But Ribadu remains focused on tackling insecurity and other violent crimes, refusing to be distracted by the noise. Sources close to Ribadu suggest that the NSA has been meticulously documenting El-Rufa’i’s moves, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. The spy master is known for his patience and strategic thinking, and it’s likely that he’ll unleash a bombshell revelation that will leave El-Rufa’i reeling.

As the days go by, El-Rufa’i’s attacks on Ribadu are becoming increasingly vitriolic. Analysts say this is a sign of desperation, as El-Rufa’i realizes he’s losing the battle for public opinion. Ribadu as a spy master has maintained a docurum of silence, despite glaring garrulous claims by El-Rufa’i that obviously pose a security threat. It’s time now for security agencies to widen their net and catch the stasis phone buglers of the spy master.
