The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Uche Nnaji, has inaugurated the National Energy Master Plan Implementation Committee (NEMiC) to reposition Nigeria’s energy sector.
This was announced in Abuja on Saturday through a statement by Dr. Robert Ngwu, the Minister’s Senior Special Adviser.
The minister tasked the committee with leading Nigeria’s transition to a cleaner, more inclusive, and sustainable energy future.
The inauguration marked the beginning of the full implementation of the National Energy Master Plan (NEMP).
Nnaji said the committee must deliver real benefits to households, industries, and communities across the country.
He explained that the National Energy Master Plan is not just a policy document but a roadmap to transform Nigeria’s energy sector.
According to him, NEMiC must fast-track energy solutions that are reliable, affordable, and climate-friendly.
“The work you do will directly affect Nigeria’s economic growth, social progress, and environmental sustainability,” he told members of the committee.
The minister expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to succeed, noting that their decisions will define Nigeria’s energy future for decades.
“This is a responsibility of the highest order, and I believe NEMiC has the capacity, vision, and commitment to rise to the occasion,” he said.
During the event, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), formally presented the implementation roadmap to the minister on behalf of the committee.
Stakeholders described the inauguration of NEMiC as a bold move to accelerate energy access, drive industrialization, and position Nigeria as a leader in clean energy in Africa.
Also present were Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, Managing Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, and Jide Awolowo, its Investment Facilitation Coordinator.
Top executives from major global engineering and power firms such as Mainstream Energy Solutions, China Machinery Engineering Company, Power China International, and Energy China also attended.
Ambassador Abaka Johnson Philbert, along with representatives from UNIDO, UNDP, and other development partners, witnessed the event.
The National Energy Master Plan (NEMP) provides a framework to diversify Nigeria’s energy sources, strengthen energy security, and align with global climate goals.
NEMiC, formed on October 17, 2024, by the Energy Commission of Nigeria, has the duty of mobilizing funds and investing in renewable energy infrastructure.
Its role includes accelerating the use of technologies that expand access to affordable and reliable power.
The committee will supervise projects across solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and other new energy technologies.
It will also oversee the National Energy Fund, which is meant to support local energy efficiency and infrastructure projects.
Currently, over 80 million Nigerians do not have reliable electricity, while more than 90 percent of households still rely on biomass for cooking.
Stakeholders say the master plan is a chance to close these gaps and unlock new opportunities for economic growth.
